One of Ginsberg’s Biggest Frustrations
In Allen Ginsberg’s poem “America,” he talks about America being run in the wrong direction and how he doesn’t like the society in America. Ginsberg expresses his feelings about America by making a list demands and asks questions directly towards America.
In the 1950’s, Americans were using all sorts of technologies such as automobiles and nuclear bombs. Ginsberg didn’t like the idea of America depending on technology as he stated in his poem, “Your machinery is too much for me.” Ginsberg is trying to show his dislike for the state that America is in. He refers “machinery” as the technology that Americans are using and depending on. He further states that the technology being used is just not necessary and that people don’t need technology.
Allen Ginsberg went further on about technology as he expressed his feelings about the nuclear bomb. He made a statement in the beginning of his poem saying, “Go fuck yourself with your atom bomb.” During the 1950’s, there was a lot going on with the development of the atom bomb. Ginsberg was furious with the government and that the development of the nuclear bomb is senseless. And that America should use their own nuclear bomb against them to feel the pain that others went through because of the nuke.
Allen Ginsberg also had a problem with America because there was a ban on drugs such as marijuana. He believed that marijuana had some good effects, but the government wouldn’t allow it. Ginsberg made a statement in his poem by saying, “I refuse to give up my obsession.” Ginsberg’s “Obsession” is marijuana and he didn’t want to give up his drug use. He refused to give up his drug addiction because he used marijuana as inspiration for his writings. When Ginsberg used marijuana, he would feel the effects of marijuana and write down what he was feeling while he was intoxicated. Marijuana was a key ingredient to Ginsberg’s writing, just like how sugar is a key ingredient in desserts.
Even though Marijuana was banned in the United States, it didn’t stop Allen Ginsberg from smoking weed. He stuck to his drug abuse as he told America through his poem by mentioning, “I smoke marijuana every chance I get.” He wasn’t going to let the government stop him from doing anything. Allen Ginsberg kept on smoking marijuana because it was his way of rebelling against the United States. He didn’t like what the government was doing to society, so he did something about it by listening to no one besides himself. Ginsberg was acting like a teenager in this situation, when America didn’t give the okay on marijuana; he rebelled against them by smoking it anyway.
Allen Ginsberg was really frustrated with the direction that America was heading in. He wanted America to go in a different direction and he added to his rebellion against America by declaring that he could run the country himself. He states, “America I’m putting my queer shoulder to the wheel.” Allen Ginsberg mentions his “queer shoulder” to notify that he is gay and he takes the statement further by telling people that he is gay and he’s going to take control of this country. It’s like he’s saying “forget you America… I’m going to run this country to where it’s supposed to be.
Ginsberg wrote statements and demands in his poem but he also wrote some questions. For example, he asked a question such as, “America when will you be angelic?” He asks this question because Ginsberg views the country as a non-peaceful place. He’s views the current society as a horrible place to be living in and he wants to know when society will become a peaceful place. He wants a world that is similar to what the transcendentalist had visioned. And that vision the transcendentalist believed in was that life should be lived freely and should not be run by government. Ginsberg wanted the world to be lived freely and thought that the government was ruining everything.
Allen Ginsberg wrote “America” to show what America is going through and show how much he dislikes America at the time. He uses statements to express how he feels about the current state of America. He acts rebellious to show that he’s sick of America and he’s not going to abide by what is occurring. And he asks all sorts of questions to add on about how he feels about the American society. In this poem, Allen Ginsberg is trying to show the faults of the United Sates and tries to change a certain part of the world.

Artifact #2: Physics Roller Coaster
This project was one of the most time consuming, but yet fun project to work on. I was assigned to build a roller coaster with Moises Haro, Marisa Rafter, and Simon Higgins. We had to build a roller coaster out of copper wire and we also had to have a theme for our roller coaster. Our theme was the "7 Wonders of the World." So we made a pyramid, the Colossus's legs, a mausoleum, and other wonders of the world. And we competed against other groups in the class to see who's roller coaster is the best. We came in tied for first, even though we should have won the contest!
